‘Dating Around’ is an amazing Netflix series that re-imagines the boring age-old genre of reality dating series. Unlike the over the top and tense concepts that have come to be the norm, this one is very laid back and low-risk. Each episode follows an individual going on five blind dates, so as to find “the one” for them, and then taking them for a second date. By including people of various races and sexual orientations, this series has become a fan favorite.
But we really need to talk about what happens in episode five. We’re introduced to Sarah, a recent New York City transplant who agrees to five blind dates. One of those is with John, who tells Sarah he goes by “Mr. John”—weird but not offensive. But then they sit down for dinner, and Sarah says she might order what the restaurant calls the Big Salad.
“It was one of those storybook things that worked out,” he says of her, traces of grief scratching at his throat. “I was a lucky guy.” At 70, Leonard is eager to find love again. To find a partner he can travel with, learn from, and share laughter with. It’s also a story we don’t witness with regularity on TV—the aging, sensitive widower in search of intimacy.

Tinder, Bumble and Hinge offer vast playing fields but slim pickings, so daters survive by wearing cynicism as armor, telling themselves that nothing matters and that they really don’t care. But “Dating Around” dispels the nihilism haunting is Parship safe the dating app experience. By replicating its process and filming it for television, the show imbues it with great significance. Although Dating Around is like the refined, classy aunt to Netflix’s other 2020 trashy dating shows Love Is Blind and Too Hot To Handle, it delivers the same cringeworthy moments that make reality dating shows so watchable.

The Franklin, at 2600 Dauphine Street, serves as an excellent place to have dates and is seen in the series. The French Quarter eatery offers good food and beverages in a hip setting. It embraces the neighborhood’s vibrant and eclectic personality and this corner plot is a cozy place for intimate conversations that might spring up on a first date. We should all adopt this mind-set when it comes to dating, but that’s easier said than done sometimes.
Full of passionate first kisses and and plenty of serious drama, Season Two does not disappoint. While the cast has yet to announce if any of their second dates led to a third or even fourth, here’s what the six members are up to on social media lately. Now that we knew that the possibility of romance and apparently business was off the table, Kenny became visibly more relaxed. He also seemed emboldened to share all of his wildly inappropriate locker-room theories about European women. Aside from a few meaningless dates here and there, I’d yet to establish anything vaguely serious in New York.
Plus, there is simply way too much fun to be had in this city when it comes to being single. There are too many women and too many places to find these women, that the idea of just picking one and submerging into the daily routine of monotony seems like a nightmare to us. The very gentlemanly Professor of Computer Science Ben deserves some happy love, although his episode was full of awkward moments so pungent it was hard to watch. We’re rooting for him and awaiting any updates from his brand new Instagram account. They proceed to a dinner table, where they trade personal histories and explicate their tattoos and probably split the spring rolls.

It’s a city of hustlers, all trying to make it, which creates this lively, ego-driven environment of cunning competition and self awareness. “Dating Around” has an eye for romance, and not just because it lingers on its daters’ coy glances. It zooms in on the most optimistic moment in a relationship (you met someone you might actually like!) and cuts away before the letdown (nevermind, he’s terrible!). Brandon’s confidence and banter make his episode one of the least secondhand-embarrassment inducing of the season.

The costume scheme has the central character repeating the same outfit, which helps to achieve a texture of simultaneity and to shade the dates as chemistry experiments in which sartorial expression is a variable held constant.
It gets tiresome and it feels tricky, but I’m still trying. Netflix’s ‘Dating Around’ hinges on the idea that meeting partners can be quite difficult. Therefore, in the series, people choose quantity over quality. They go out on a series of five dates which are filled with flirtatious banter, the occasional awkward exchange, and even rarer moments of genuine connection.
